How the Officers and Reps of NUS are Elected

Full Time Officers;
President, VP Further Education, VP Higher Education, VP Society & Citizenship, VP Welfare, VP Union Development - Elected by the delegates of National Conference to serve one year from July 1st to June 30th. Any student who is a member of affiliated student organisation may stand for these offices.
International Students' Officer - Elected by the International Students' Conference. Serves one year from July 1st to June 30th. Must be an international student who is a member of a constituent Student Organisation.
NUS Scotland President and Deputy President - Elected at the Scottish Conference by the Alternative Vote. Candidates must be a member of an affiliated organisation of the NUS of the United Kingdom.
NUS Scotland Womens Officer - Elected at the Scottish Womens' Conference by the Alternative Vote. Candidates must be a woman and a member of an affiliated organisation of NUS Scotland.
Zones;
'Zones' represent the 5 policy sections of the NUS; Higher Education, Further Education, Society and Citizenship, Welfare, and Union Development.
Zone Committees - Each Zone has a committee comprising;
- The Vice President for that Zone who is Chair
- The NUS President (ex-officio)
- 5 individual members elected by the Zone Conferences. Each Constiuent Member (e.g. Student Union) is entitled to send one delegate to zone conferences and vote. Only FE constituent members may send delegates to FE Conference, and only HE constituent members may send delegates to HE Conference. Officers elected at Zone Conference remain in office until the end of the next Zone Conference. For the Society and Citizenship, Welfare, and Union Development Zones, at least one of the 5 individual members must be from the FE sector.
Zone representation on NEC - Each Zone elects one person to sit on the National Executive Council according to a procedure each Zone shall decide upon.
Nations;
'Nations' are politically autonomous bodies that are responsible for the formation of policy and the carrying out of policy work of the NUS that has been devolved to them by the National Conference.
NUS Scotland
The NUS Scotland Executive Committee comprises;
- The President of NUS Scotland (see Full Time Officers)
- The Deupty President of NUS Scotland (see Full Time Officers)
- The NUS Scotland Womens' Officer (see Full Time Officers)
- The NUS Scotland LGBT Officer - Elected by the NUS Scotland LGBT Conference using the Alternative Vote. Candidates must be an LGBT student at an affiliated student organisation of the NUS of the United Kingdom.
- The NUS Scotland Disabled Students' Officer - Elected by the Scottish Disabled Students Conference using the Alternative Vote. Candidates must be a disabled student at an affiliated student organisation of the NUS of the United Kingdom.
- The Mature Students' Officer - Elected by the Matures Students Caucus at Scottish Conference using the Single Transferable Vote. Candidates must by a member of a constituent student organisation on the NUS of the United Kingdom.
- Six Executive Officers - Elected at Scottish Conference using the Single Transferable Vote. Two places are reserved for candidates from the FE Sector. Candidates must be a member of a constituenct student organisation of the National Union in Scotland.
- The Convenors of the recognised NUS Areas in Scotland.
Full Time Officers shall serve from 1st June to 30th June the year after. All other officers shall serve from 1st June to 31st May the year after.
NUS Scotland Steering Committee shall comprise;
- 4 members elected by Scottish Conference using the Single Transferable Vote. Candidates must be a member of an affiliated student organisation of the NUS of the United Kingdom.
- One member of the Scottish Executive who shall act as liason between the two bodies and not have voting rights.
The committee is responsible for the democracy of NUS Scotland. Members serve for one year from the end of the Conference at which they were elected to the end of the next Scottish Conference.
NUS Scottish Women's Campaign Committee shall comprise;
- NUS Scotland Women's Officer
- 4 members elected by the Scottish Women's Conference
- The Scottish Areas’ Women’s Officers, Area Convenors who are women, and women members of the NUS Scotland Executive, who shall be non voting members of the Committee.
NUS Scottish Women's Steering Committee shall comprise;
- 2 members elected at Scottish Women's Conference

Liberation Campaigns;
The 'Liberation Campaigns' are politically autonomous bodies that are responsible for the formation of policy and carrying out the policy work of the NUS with regard to the following areas; Disabled Students, Women, Black Students, and Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Trans Students.
Block of 15 Members;
15 students who are members of affiliated student organisations to serve for a year from 1st July to 30th June. 5 positions are reserved for Further Education students (however Further Education candidates can also be elected in the remaining 10 places as well).
